Why Microcement Costs More Than Cement Effect Paint

Retail “cement effect paint” may cost £40–£80 per tin.

But professional microcement includes:

  • Multi-stage substrate preparation

  • Primer systems

  • Reinforcement mesh (if required)

  • Multiple hand-applied cement layers

  • Sanding and refinement

  • Protective sealing system

  • Labour by trained specialists

You’re not paying for paint.
You’re paying for a seamless architectural surface.

The labour involved in achieving a decent finish in micropcement will tell you everything you need to know, split between 6-8 visits for most of the installations we do.

To make it more cost-effective overall, we find that clients may want a feature wall in Venetian polished plaster or other areas of their project to be coated in one of our decorative finishes.

What Affects the Cost of Microcement?

1️⃣ Substrate Condition

  • New plasterboard with decent plastering

  • Cement board
  • Dot and dab

  • Existing tiles

  • Movement cracks and repair work

Poor substrates increase preparation time on our part; we’ll highlight any cause for concern as part of our site survey.

2️⃣ Size of Area

Larger areas reduce per m² cost slightly. If we work between multiple spaces, we’re able to flow more efficiently, which is reflected in the overall project price.
Small areas are labour-intensive and therefore proportionally higher.

3️⃣ Location

Premium areas such as:

  • Esher

  • Cobham

  • Kingston

  • Reigate

  • Central London

Often involves higher logistical and specification demands, congestion charges and parking costs also come into play.

4️⃣ Finish Level

  • Smooth minimalist

  • Textured industrial

  • Deep tonal movement

  • Designer bespoke blends

The more refined the finish, the more time required, with smooth microcement being the most labour-intensive and requiring a higher amount of sundries such as sanding discs.

Is Microcement Worth the Investment?

For many of our clients, the answer is yes, because:

  • It removes grout lines, giving a clean and modern aesthetic

  • Creates seamless flow

  • Adds architectural depth and structure to your surfaces

  • Increases perceived property value

  • Delivers a high-end look and feel to your space

In luxury renovations across Surrey and London, microcement is often selected over tiles for its uninterrupted visual impact.

Can You Install Microcement Yourself to Save Money?

Technically, yes.

Realistically? Rarely recommended.

Microcement is unforgiving. Application errors show immediately, and repairs are not always invisible.

Many DIY attempts ultimately cost more to rectify, and we often get calls from dissatisfied homeowners who have had a poor experience with another installer or inferior products, wanting us to correct the work. Save yourself the time, headaches or additional costs and do it right the first time.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does microcement cost per m² in the UK?

Typically £130–£195 per m² for walls, depending on specification and preparation. For floors, you can expect to pay £160-220 per m².

Is microcement cheaper than tiles?

Material cost may be similar or slightly higher, but installation complexity differs. Microcement offers a seamless finish without grout. We advise that it is comparable to a decent tiled finish.

How long does microcement last?

When professionally installed and sealed, microcement can last many years with correct maintenance. Again, comparable to the longevity you’d expect from a good quality tiled bathroom.

We supply aftercare documentation and cleaning products for your installation once completed.

Does microcement crack?

Proper substrate preparation minimises risk. Movement in the structure can affect any rigid surface, so settlement in your new build or large amounts of movement may make it more likely to crack. For this reason, we offer a reinforced mesh system, and can further improve this by double meshing and overlaying the materials.

Is microcement suitable for underfloor heating?

Yes, when installed correctly on suitable substrates. We provide expert guidance here on a case-by-case basis.  Feedback from clients who have opted to use microcement instead of tiles have reported that it is warmer to touch and walk on, therefore reducing the need to use their underfloor heating systems as much.
