Why Microcement Bathrooms Are The Best Addition For A Modern Home

Designing a microcement bathroom space is not an everyday job for most of us, unless of course you’re a bathroom designer.

There are many factors to take into consideration, such as layout, fixtures and fittings and most importantly the colour, texture and finish of the microcement installation in your bathroom.

Given the costs associated with this finishing item, it’s not a decision to take lightly, so we advise seeking a professional who can advise and showcase examples, view the product in person, such as at our showroom.

For those who explore the alternative finishes, including microcement for your bathroom, it is important to settle on a design you’ll be happy with for many years to come.

Are you planning to design the bathroom space yourself or do you need assistance? A bathroom shop may be able to assist, or your local bathroom installer, we’ll happily work alongside either of those and at the same time work with you to get the best result all round.

We do offer a turnkey solution for microcement bathrooms, giving you a less stressful experience for the renovation process, but this service isn’t currently available everywhere.

Why choose Microcement for your bathroom?

Having spoken directly with people interested in using Microcement, these are the main reasons we find our clients choose microcement in their bathrooms over a regular tiled finish:

  • Seamless coating, you could have the same continuous coating on all surfaces in your bathroom should you choose to.
  • Minimalist aesthetic, clean lines, unfussy designs and an uncluttered lifestyle.
  • Level of personalisation extends beyond colours, choose how you’d like the surfaces to be finished.
  • Colour matching service available for paint brands such as Farrow & Ball, Little Greene and most designer paint brands, or you may decide to go down the bespoke route.  Additionally you can integrate other products or design styles in, such as liquid metal detailing, stencils, focal points and more.
  • Toughness and durability, we only install using time-tested product ranges that offer reassurance for our clients and means their installation will stand up to the test of time.
  • No grout lines, which is possibly the most common reason people get excited about these products.
  • Maintenance and lifespan, when compared to tadelakt, microcement offers a much more serviceable coating as it can be sanded and resealed to rejuvenate the surfaces whereas tadelakt coatings will be more susceptible to aging and damage, often leading to it needing to be recoated. Microcement is relatively low maintenance compared to other options but it does still need caring for.

Are Microcement products suitable for wet areas in my bathroom?

Yes, in fact microcement is the only product we’d use in areas such as:

  • Shower enclosures
  • Sink splashbacks
  • Floors
  • Basin and shower trays

Because we only use one of two brands that are water resistant and have been rigorously tested we can guarantee our work and know that these microcement  products are suitable for use in wet areas or on floors.

However we still advise our clients to care for their installations and avoid leaving water to pool for long periods of time or dirty wet items of clothing or laundry to be left on the surfaces.

What textures are available for Microcement in bathrooms?

Textures available in our microcement ranges are less than the textured venetian plaster counterparts, but we can still offer you smooth, medium and coarse grain finishes.

One of our products has the option for a ‘polished concrete’ look and feel, but is only suitable for floors.

When it comes to achieving shinier or smoother surfaces in Microcement we can polish up the sealer but it will never bring it up to the same level as a Polished Venetian plaster as an example, these products are two very different compositions.

What colour Microcement can you use in your bathroom?

When choosing the right colour for your microcement bathroom installation, we will work to either a standard manufacturer colour chart or colour match service, so in theory any colour is possible.

Having a good insight for the space and what else is being added in to bring it all together, it’s important to consider all details as changing the colour once installation has begun or finished will add considerable costs and time onto the project.

You might decide on a lighter colour or a neutral shade, looking to the fixtures and fittings to bring it all together, or go bonkers and have a bold, tasteful hue that mirrors your personality exactly.

There are no rules here.

How long will a Microcement bathroom last?

We advise the lifespan of your microcement bathroom to be around 10- 15 years, which is generally the timeframe most people will keep their current bathrooms for anyway, so is comparable.

Providing the space is cared for there shouldn’t be any problems.

If you keep it clean, are considerate of heavy objects being placed on the surfaces and steer clear of impact from dropping things then it will last as long as it can.

Will my Microcement bathroom crack?

Microcement that is installed correctly in your bathroom should not crack, providing the installation has been done following the right methods and the substrate is sound.

The preparation by the builder or bathroom installer has to be done correctly, since microcement is a decorative topping and only a few mm thick.

We work alongside these contractors and can advise on the surface and substrate preparations if they need assistance, as the homeowner it is imperative that the people doing the work before we arrive are knowledgeable on what needs to happen.

Incorrect substrate or movement where there shouldn’t be any is setting you up for problems further on down the line.

Damage if it occurs in the Microcement can be repaired, which includes cracking, however the process for doing so can be disruptive and worst case, require a re-coat of the product.

Will a Microcement bathroom add value to my house?

This is open to debate, since doing any upgrades or modernisation to your house can add value, a new bathroom, along with a kitchen are the two areas where a decent sized investment will be needed.

Someone who enjoys and appreciates the effort and workmanship of a microcement bathroom will see it as a value add.

Those who prefer a more traditional bathroom may not.
