Why Has Venetian Plaster Made A Big Comeback?

Interior design trends change all the time, and one of the most popular of the last few years has to be Venetian plaster.

However, the history of Venetian plaster dates back for hundreds of years; in fact, its origins begin in the 1st century AD, so it’s certainly not a new style.

So, why is it now, after centuries of being superseded by other popular wall coverings, making a big comeback?

Back to nature

Over the last few years, a big interior design trend has been going back to nature.

Rattan furniture, wooden features, natural textures, lots of plants, and neutral tones have proved immensely popular among homeowners who want to create a peaceful ambience.

The attachment to nature has been driven by pandemic lockdowns, says Chris Pask, director at interiors and architecture firm Charlton Brown.

“Clients are increasingly looking for a greater connection to the outdoors, whether that is a literal connection via roof terraces, balconies and beautifully landscaped gardens or more subtle nods to greenery and nature throughout the home,” he told Homes And Gardens

Mr Pask explained materials that are found in nature, much like Venetian plaster, which is a mixture of limestone and water, encourage a “sense of calm” in the house.

Longer lasting

Another reason why people are opting for Venetian plaster is it is longer lasting than other options.

As it hardens more over time, it is less likely to shrink or crack. Therefore, it does not need to be touched up in a few years. It is also less prone to damp problems, as it is more breathable.

In fact, some people refer to it as a ‘lifetime finish’, as it could even outlast homeowners’ time in the house.

This means once it is done, there is no need to replace, update or repair it.

High-end finish

Due to its longevity, the fact that only experts in Venetian plastering can apply it, and its historical significance, it is being used more and more in luxury residences, hotels and commercial spaces.

Its beautiful finish also makes it a high-end product, while being more expensive than traditional plaster means it is still a luxury item.

However, thanks to its low maintenance – just needing soap and water to clean it – and its durability, it is a cost-effective interior design choice over time.

Adds character

Another reason why Venetian plaster is en vogue again is it can add character to a room.

While accessories, such as furnishings, mirrors, plants and lamps, are typically used to give a space charm or personality, this can be achieved through the wall covering alone.

The colour, texture and finish you choose from your Venetian plastering can make the difference between creating a Mediterranean farmhouse kitchen or a contemporary hallway with marble-effect walls.

No other paint or wallpaper is needed to build on its character, as it is able to transform a room’s look entirely on its own.
