Pros and Cons of Using Venetian Polished Plaster

Venetian polished plasters have been used to create magnificent finishes since the Middle Ages for those who were able to afford such a luxurious wall covering in their abodes.

Product thickness ranges between 0.5 and 1mm typically for fine grain finishes such as the marble polished plaster, depending on the desired appearance, and they are designed to be plastered in extremely thin coatings which are layered up in stages. Often referred to by a variety of names, including “polished plasters” “fine grain marmorino” “polished stucco” and “marble plasters.”

This is largely due to their resemblance to natural marble and the high shine, traditional methods of hand application using a spatulato and the glossy finish that is produced.

Venetian plasters are formed mostly of slaked lime putty, fine marble dust, natural waxes, and oils. Venetian plaster application that integrates traditional artisan craftsmanship with contemporary style is required to deliver distinctive and excellent finishes.

Cons of using Venetian Polished Plaster

  • Venetian polished plaster commands a higher investment than paint, even if it is less than solid slabs marble you’ll find it is a premium and luxurious wall covering option
  • If there is any damage created such as scratches, chips or scuffs then the wall will usually need recoating and finishing to restore the previous high shine
  • Not the toughest or most durable wall covering option, it could crack if there is movement in the substrate underneath
  • The surface preparation underneath the polished plaster needs to be flawless as it will show up imperfections and blemishes in the substrate below
  • Can’t just paint over it if you decide that you’d like the wall another colour at a later date
  • Limitations in location, by which we refer to the unsuitability to use externally or within wet areas such as shower enclosures, however if it is the particular style or finish that you’re looking to recreate in these areas then we have other products in our range that are suitable!
