There are a lot of reasons to choose polished plaster for your next renovation project, from its versatility in harmonising with a wide variety of interior design styles to its subtle, luxury aesthetic.
A lot of people opt for Venetian plaster because it looks great and suits the style of home they are designing, but a recent study by online property marketplace Zillow suggests that it could increase the value of your home.
The study, which looked at 2m homes listed for sale in 2024 with various stated keywords and compared the final sale price to a pre-listing estimate, suggested that homes which advertise themselves as featuring Venetian plaster could sell for up to 3.5 per cent more than the estimated price.
For context, a conservatory, according to Checkatrade, adds seven per cent to a property’s value, only twice that of polished plaster for a considerably higher price and time commitment.
Assuming a home costs the Rightmove average of £371,870, the use of Venetian plaster could hypothetically add up to £13,000 to the sale price, with a feature that people often choose out of love regardless.
The reasons why this is the case are varied, but it comes down to the unique look that it provides, mixing modern practicality with traditional construction methods and a beautifully organic-looking finish.
Many people love polished stone and marble finishes, but the actual use of marble is far from ideal due to the cost and weight involved in using the stone. Polished plaster is stronger relative to its weight, lighter and more practical.
Zillow notes that this follows a trend of organic modernism, as other newer materials demonstrate greater popularity than more familiar materials.
Soapstone countertops, for example, helped improve property sales compared to quartz, whilst a wet room was the most desirable bathroom feature compared to other spa-styled accessories.
What this will mean in the future is uncertain, but if you are planning to add polished plaster to your home, this is one more great reason to make the call.
